Trends in lawGoogle has finally answered our prayers. For years lawyers have been waiting for Google to do for case law what it already did for internet search. Today, Google announced that it has added judicial opinions and law review articles to Google Scholar, a FREE database of scholarly research. I tried the new features earlier today, and I must say that there is no perceptible difference in quality from Westlaw or Lexis Nexis. In fact, I found that the presentation style on Google Scholar was easier on the eyes than the presentation style on Westlaw.
What will this mean for Westlaw and Lexis, subscription services that charge an arm and a leg for access? What will this mean for law firms that previously had to budget enormous sums of money for access? What will this mean for competing upstarts such as Findlaw and Fastcase? The answer to all three is that only time will tell.
But in the short term, I would like to posit the following prediction. This development will add fuel to the fire that is burning down the edifice of the traditional law firm structure. That is to say, if legal research tools are made free, lots of firm lawyers who are currently on the fence deciding whether or not to hang their own shingle will have less reason to stay in the firm. This will expedite the already evident trend toward the solo-fication of the American legal profession.
